Roofing: Impact Resistant Shingles

Owens Corning Oakridge® Shingles - Desert Tan A recent development in residential and commercial roofing is the Impact Resistant Roofing Shingle. At MidKansas Exteriors, we have found this to be a good choice for certain homeowners that have been hit with hail in the past.

The 4 years between 1991 and 1995 produced 8 billion dollars in insurance costs per year on average. A large part of those payouts were due to hail damage and wind damage. These new shingles resist the significant granule loss, penetration and damage to the edges of the shingle from hail and wind.

There are specific standards that a shingle has to meet to qualify as a Class 4 impact resistant shingle. The impact resistance is set by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the wind resistance standard is set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International).

UL 2218 is a classification that is a result of testing steel balls directed at roofing samples. If they pass the test and receive the Class 4 rating the shingles are considered the top in resistance to hail damage. If you install this class of shingle, you may be able to reduce your insurance cost with some of the major insurance companies.

Each manufacturer has their own proprietary approach to manufacturing these impact and wind resistant shingles. Our MidKansas Exteriors roofing experts can provide you with this information and help you decide on this type of shingle for your home.
