This is because there are 3 notches that give the appearance of 3 separate shingles when they are installed. They have a coating of granules made of minerals that protect the product from algae, sunlight, and fungus because there is copper or zinc in the mix. In addition it adds a dimension of color.
The best in this style of shingle is referred to as an ‘architectural’ or ‘dimensional’ shingle. They are rated as premium because they are thicker and usually laminated to create a wood shake look. This creates a roof that looks textured rather than flat.
